Repetition. Doing something over and over. Muslims will often repeat the 99 names of God over and over again. Not sure why. But it has something to do with blessing or “barkat.” Yesterday I returned with the group to Nizamuddin for the second time in this trip and my umpteenth time. Today we return yet again. Different times, different light, different people and all for different images or more of the story. This man is sitting on a carpet with 1o or 12 other men all pulling out handfuls of cleaned date pits using them to count out the names of God, then doing it again like prayer beads. In all the many years I have visited this place, I have never seen this. Repetition, it can bring a blessing.

    I agree, lovely image.

Have you ever seen the Tibetan Buddhist 100 000 prostrations? Now that is the ultimate in repetition.

I spent a lot of time in the mosque too yesterday and this is definitely a picture that captures the mood – and does so beautifully. Looks like you’re getting your eye in early on this trip, Matt.

Thanks to all. Actually, I felt I was off my stride yesterday and felt this was the only real image from the day worth posting. But as some photographer friends say, if you get one really good one every day you shoot, you’re doing good. I hope I can do at least that.

I don’t know what else you shot that day, but this one is definitely a keeper. It’s a beautiful image. (And I really appreciate the posts while you’re travelling. I expected three of my favorite blogs to go quiet for a couple of weeks.)
