Istanbul: Day two

Istanbul: Day two

The Yeni (New) Mosque‎.

I am amazed by this city. I guess I expected something closer to India.  Boy was I ever wrong. I love Istanbul. What limited exposure I have had, and it is very limited, feels very European, but with a welcoming edge that I never felt in most places in Europe. The Ottoman architecture and art is reminiscence for Mogul architecture and art for me. I have been overwhelmed by the welcoming spirit of the people. True, many just want to sell me a carpet or other things, but still there seems a genuine charm about the people. Again, very similar feel to Kashmir.  Maybe that is why I feel very at home here. Today we visit the Grand Bazaar and the spice market. I truly wish I had more time here. More time off the tourist trail and see real Istanbul, but it will have to be another visit.

Sounds fantastic Matt. Turkey is high on my list of countries I'd love to visit. My father travelled right through the middle east and Europe in the mid '90's and he says Turkey was without a doubt his favourite country. I've heard similar things from others. Enjoy your time there, and safe travels thereafter.

Interestingly, the “Ottoman” architecture seems so similar to the earlier Byzantine architecture, you can barely tell them apart. Curious.
