great review! i just went on b&h and the price is not a killer for a good ballhead. Perfect timing because I’m in the market for one (currently I’m using the one that comes with the tripod -embarrassing!) 😉
Just to clarify, you went to B&H and found it was not a killer price or it was a good price? I think the price is somewhere around $350. A good ball head is not cheap. The Arca-Swiss will run you $450 to well over $500 and a Manfrotto you can get for less than $300. But let me remind you, you get what you pay for. And with the Acratech you get more! If $350 is too much then look at the other ball heads in the Arcatech line.

Funny. That was in my yard and the long lens was to just show the balance. But then, I think you knew that. So let’s go try out this head somewhere on the island!
this review was helpful as i am new to photography and it has been real hard to choose a ballhead and tripod that is light and strong for backpacing. iam to the point where i wish somebody would say get this and that with good advice. there are so many options to choose and with out experiance i do not know which way to go. hope you can help. thanks

Good & informative review. Didn’t realize there were so many birds singing when I was there though.. No wonder you hook up a long telephoto on the 5D.

Mike, I trek all throughout the Himalaya. If it is helpful, let me say, get this ball head! It is just what you described.
