iPhone Mania
Here is the situation. I have a good friend who just bought his wife a new iPhone 16 gb 3G to replace her older 2G 8 gb. I have been coveting the iPhone long before it was even released. So when I heard this I asked him if he would sell me his old phone. He offered to “bless me” with it and just gave the thing to me. WOW!! But here is the problem, remember where I live? Malaysia. The iPhone is not here and his phone is AT&T. So what to do? Now I am not going to say anything more about that. But, what I really want to know is what is your favorite iPhone application and why? You are not going to win anything. I just want your thoughts, come on share the love. What is the application and why?
OK, I will start it off. Though I don’t have my hands on the phone yet, I use to have the iT-Ouch (painful memories, let’s don’t go there!). Anyway, I really like running Fring on it. It gave me many of the capiblities of Skype, but on my iTouch. Skype has not released their software for the iPhone or iTouch yet, so . But Fring gave me the ability to chat for free using my current Skype contact list. I used it a lot. Now with the iPhone, unlike the iTouch I can take advantage of the talk feature as well and make computer-to-computer calls for free anywhere in the world or Skype out call for a minimum cost. Very cool.
I don’t have an iPhone, but my co-worker does. His favorite app makes fart sounds. Yeah, he’s a 30-something year old child. That probably wasn’t very helpful for you, though. 😉
Hmmm, Thanks Toni, but that wasn’t really what I had in mind. 🙄
I’m sure that you already know, but just in case… You can quite easily, quickly and cheaply have that AT&T “problem” taken care of in Bangkok.
I don’t have an iPhone but I saw on strobist a while back that you can download an ap to make it into a softbox for close range.
Oh dear, I am so far behind the times- I don’t have an Apple anything (not even an ipod…though my husband has one so perhaps that counts!) I would like an iPhone but my last mobile ended up in an unfortunate incident involving the toilet so it appears I cannot be trusted with anything small and expensive 🙂
I am liking the sound of that softbox application- sounds fascintating.
Vanessa – You can check this out the Strobist article here:http://strobist.blogspot.com/2009/01/is-that-soft-box-in-your-pocket-or-are.html and someone read it and made this: http://bensyverson.com/software/catchlight/
Jeffrey, Yeah Malaysia has a lot of …ah hum…help with this sort of thing as well.
Here is another freebee: http://houdah.com/ These guys make some very popular software. Like the geotagging software Gavin and I have writen about inthe past. But they also make some really useful iPhone apps. Like the ACTCurrency: Universal currency converter and the ACTPrinter both free. Here is the link: http://houdah.com/iPhone/
Hey Matt, I don’t know if you have already got this sorted out or not but the best tool for unlocking the iphone can be found here http://is.gd/hNwJ I have been using an unlocked one in the US on the T-Mobile network and every thing works great!

Don’t have an iPhone, want one badly though too. Therefore, don’t have a favorite App! Someday.
To make calls over 3G/EDGE/GPRS with Fring download; VoIPover3G in Cydia.
If you don’t have this I think you can only call when you’re connected to a wifi network.
Well, I’d love to have a iphone too… the iphone is becoming day to day less expensive, but the fares aren’t, so I’m waiting! (and let’s say it: don’t really have the need for it, it’s just for fun – already have a Nokia E51, which is 3G and can connect to whatever wifi it find, so it’s okay for me that far). but sill, I like the iphone 😀
I have a Blackberry rather than an Iphone and an app I love on that is called Viigo. I did a quick search to see if it’s available for Iphone and it doesn’t appear to be but, this is recommended as an alternative http://forums.crackberry.com/showthread.php?t=81682
Oscar, Good info. I only have used it with my old iT-Ouch. Thanks everyone, these are some great leads for me to check out.
Here’s a good list of apps for the modern traveler:
