Like Father – like Daughter

Like Father – like Daughter

As you know, I am spending time with the family this week. Maybe I will let you guess where we are. I found a great little hotel that I will try to blog about in a few days. But for now, let me tell you there are a lot of things that a child can do to make their parent proud of them. But it is always special when a child tries to emulate the parent. It is even more special when the child does a good job at it. Today I let Jessie play with my 5D MKII. Yes, I know that is a bit dangerous. But she had the strap around her neck at all time. She and another little boy that is vacationing with us went crazy with shooting picture. It was slow going with Jessie. But once she got he hang of it; WOW! There are images she shot today that I wish I had taken! Check them out. These are all hers. I did the post work on them in Lightroom as always. Be honest and tell me what you think.

    Matt,
I don’t know how old your daughter is, but without doubt I am impressed. Those are absolutely pictures I would have loved to have taken myself. Every single one has a great composition, with nothing just hanging in the center of the frame. The leading lines and color in the first shot are excellent and the lighting and interest in the second is outstanding. That one being my favorite because the expression on the boy is the cherry on top of the sunday. There is nice detail and texture in the third shot.

I’d say you have a future photographer on your hands. =)

    Matt,

These are great. I love the coffee cup shot. It’s obvious she has an eye!

Wow – looks like you’re going to be investing in another 5DmkII for the family.

Wonderful images Jessie!! I like them all but the coffee cup shot is my favorite as well.

FYI: Jessie is 12 years old. Yes, I would love to have the coffee cup (actually tea) and the second shot both in my portfolio as well.

Time to hang it up and hand the camera over to your daughter, Matt:). Just kidding, but, yeah, these are waaay better than most beginner shots from adults, so she’s definitely got talent. The boy and the coffee images particularly impress me. Exciting times are ahead:)

My favorite is definitely the boy. The color and light is just fascinating, but not so much so that I do not just get caught up in his face and eyes. I can just see a fun story in progress. Excellent shots.

Wow – fantastic. Everyone should hand over their DSLR to their kids and see what they can do. Maybe they see things a little more naturally, while we are applying all our learned knowledge? A new book in the making – Taking Childish Pictures!

Move over Dad! My favourites are the boy (damn she even managed catchlights in his eyes!) and the teacup. Jessie take a bow- you have got some fabulous talent and Dad needs to buy you a camera of your own so you can keep shooting. I think that one of the greatest things here is that these are “everyday” objects that Jessie has managed to make look interesting and unique. I think there is a certain creative freedom that young people have (maybe as adults we tend to overthink things, compare ourselves too much to others, try too hard to get a great shot?or maybe that’s just me?!)which should be nurtured and encouraged.
    Go Jessie!

You might have lost that 5D2 to your daughter! I lost 2 5D’s to my daughter for the same reason…she can shoot.

I’m just learning and just starting out myself, but the composition ROCKS! She’s done amazingly well! The keys just have my curiosity racing, but the tea cup is simply SIMPLE, which I am really enamored with!

I’d hand over my camera, but I’m BLESSED just to have it and if anything happens to it, I can’t replace it. It’s just a lowly D90, but it’s gotta do for now. So my boys know they cannot touch it. 😉

Wow, I’d be happy to claim any of these shots. I love that second one in particular. You’ve got a talented daughter and I think she needs her own camera, if she doesn’t already have one.

I’m with Bob, I just wish I had kids to hand the camera over too! I like 1, 3, & 4 personally. 3 & 4 specifically for the reason above, they’re simplistic but work great and in such a natural way i’m rarely able to achieve myself. #1 I like purely because it’s a great photo, again, natural, simple, but captures the moment perfectly.

Time to hang up my camera and go back to the brushes. Your daughters ahead of me in the game already!

She definitively rocks! Matt your time is done 😀 Yes I think it’s time for her to have a camera of her own, and with the wise advices from her father, she may go further in the great adventure of photographers!

The use of color and space to compose were quite well done- she should be proud as well as you!

Fantastic! My 11-year-old daughter regularly borrows my Nikon D50 and does some terrific work too. I sometimes will post produce them with Lightroom 2.0. Some of her good shots are up at her blog: http://picsbymika.blogspot.com
