The Blue Mosque & The Ayasofya

The Blue Mosque & The Ayasofya

It started snowing as our plain touched down at 8 am here in Istanbul. It has not stopped. In fact it has intensified. I had planned on going out and doing some site seeing, but with the lack of sleep and the blowing snow I only made it across the street to the The Sultan Ahmed Mosque or the Blue Mosque as it is often called and the Ayasofya. Now is not the time to give you a history lesson, but you can read all about them HERE & HERE on Wikipedia.

One thing that is always a challenge when shooting well known and over photographed icons like the Blue Mosque, Ayasofya or Taj Mahal is how to shoot them fresh. Today I was blessed with bad weather.

Matt, Angela and I are in love with the second vertical image, with the Blue Mosque in the bg. I'm sorry you couldn't do all the exploring I recommended for you. But this weather was a true blessing; and it was clearly given to someone who knew what to do with it!

    In Turkey, we say, Afedin!

There is something enchanting about the first picture to me. Especially seeing the waving palm in the snow, bringing a visualization of two different worlds clashing. Stunning! The snowy dome pictures remind me of a Russian church in Moscow, while the palm seems to place the setting as a true Mosque!
