Depth of Field: Gary Dowd
This was a short interview I did with Gary Dowd back at last year’s Photoshop convention in Las Vegas. Gary and I shared a room and I was able to take 30 minutes of his time to sit and chat about his experience as a producer for photographers. This is a job that is not publicized much. He’s the guy behind the guy behind the camera. Gary is a great guy with a great heart and spirit and the kind of guy you want on a complicated photo shoot with you. Gary has a compassionate heart, not just for the people that are being photographed but also for the photographer. And that’s kind of person I want around me when I’m on a photo shoot. Gary wants the photographer to look the best, to get the best images and help whatever agency they are shooting for communicate their vision the most effectively. Gary has been a producer for many large NGOs like World Vision, Save the Children and others. Probably, the photographer Gary Works with the most is a guy all my readers know well, my buddy David duChemin. You’ve seen David’s images and now you get to hear a little more about what it takes to get those images from the guy that holds the reflector, schleps the bags as well as deals with all of the small and often large logistical nightmares the come along the way on any photo assignment. I hope you enjoy this interview, and be sure to drop by Gary’s blog.
