The Yellow City
Sometimes, you find an object or a place that screams to be photographed. Gavin Gough has his rainbow umbrella that he can’t stop from shooting. It happened to me on my recent trip to Vietnam. I got mesmerized, hypnotized maybe even seduced by the yellow city of Hoi An. Dorothy had her Emerald City and I guess I have my Yellow City. Mustard would probably be a more accurate description, but it just doesn’t seem to have the same ring; Mustard City? Anyway, I became obsessed. I had to shoot my wife, my daughter, every bicycle, every conical hatted woman, everything in front of a yellow wall. I think I lost it. I went a little completely loopy. Some people get star struck, moon struck, I got yellow struck.
Beautifully vivid, Matt. Though I wouldn’t impulsively paint your kitchen mustard.
Love the mustard struck images….
Funny. As I pulled up these images, Silvia said “Hoi An?”. She can recognize the city from the color! It’s a great place. We’ve been twice and found that the tourism had increased remarkably by the last visit, but it’s still a wonderful place––with amazing food. And if one jumps on a bicycle and pedals out of town, then the tourists all disappear.
I loved Hoi An when I was there. It’s a beautiful little town. Did you get to have a meal at Mango Mango?
Wonderful post and gallery of Hoi An images – and I totally understand the yellow wall obsession 🙂 !
I love this gallery of yellow images. This is such a lively color, but it also draws the eyes right to it, even when you see thumbnails. I think the image of the guy reading newspaper is my favorite, This image seem to be in Henri Cartier-Bresson style a bit, with snapping the picture in the right moment, when the guy noticed you. And then he has such an open, approving face, it makes me smile.
