The Onsmo X-85 EZLock & San Fabian, Philippines
The ubiquitous Filipino tricycle and driver. Shot with the Fujifilm GFX 50s, FUJIFILM GF 32-64mm f/4, and Onsmo X85 softbox. San Fabian Public Market, Philippines.
Like India, the Philippines is a street and cultural photographer’s dream. The markets are full of beautiful people and unique opportunities to photograph. So after being away for over four years, I wanted to make some stunning photos. The reality is that I am not sure when I might return, and I wanted to take full advantage of this opportunity.
I have two goals for this trip. The first was to catch up with the family that lives here. Second, I was asked to give a two-day workshop in Baguio on visual storytelling.
Today, I got up early, snagged my nephew, and headed to the local market here in San Fabian. My nephew, Mark, acted as guide, translator, and grip, and he did very well for the first time holding a softbox. Photography may never be a priority when visiting family, but it is still important. I can’t come to a place like this and not photograph life. I generally try to pack light when visiting. So this trip, I took my Fujifilm GFX 50s, the GF 110mm, and the 32-64mm. For lighting, I brought the Godox AD200. For an off-camera light modifier, I am using the new Onsmo Porta X85 Ezlock. It is similar to the SMDV Speedbox, but at a fraction of the cost and every bit as good.
I love this softbox. It is quick to set up and easy to put away, making it ideal for travel. Unfortunately, this softbox is limited to two sizes, 65cm, and 85cm. I am begging Jay at Onsmo to make a 90cm and a 110cm. I have been using it in my home studio for around six months. However, this visit to the Philippines is the first time I have been able to use it in the field. The X85 isn’t a giant softbox. So, it is easily carried around a crowded market. But at the same time, the quality of light isn’t overly harsh. Of course, a more giant 110cm softbox might be more challenging to maneuver in a market, but the light would be softer. All-in-all, the Onsmo Porta X-85 Ezlock has proved to be very reliable.
My quick look at the Onsmo Porta X85 and X65 Ezlock softboxes.
Beautiful! I love how Matt always seems to capture personalities in his images.
Thank you, Darren. Thanks for the visit.
